Climate
Temperatures rarely fall below 30 degrees and any winter snowfall
is a treat, with summer temperatures averaging 92 to 95 degrees.
Dillon also offers approximately 220 days of sunshine each year
allowing residents to take advantage of the outdoors during
all four seasons. Given the mild climate, recreational opportunities
are abundant in Dillon.
Economic Base
Dillon County is a quietly progressive area in the Carolinas.
Home to South of the Border, one of the most famous tourist
stops along I-95, as well as such major industries as Perdue,
Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, Wix Corporation, Dilmar
Oil Company and SEMC Dillon County provides an excellent economic
base.
Accessibility
With I-95 only a mile and a half from the center of town and
Amtrack making daily stops in Dillon County, Dillon provides
easy access to both North and South Carolina, as well as many
great destinations like Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Charlotte
and Pinehurst.
Housing
In Dillon and the surrounding towns you can find several comfortable
and quiet neighborhoods offering a wide selection of traditional
and contemporary homes, or you can live in the country and still
arrive to the downtown within five or ten minutes.
Life in Dillon
Living in Dillon provides a relaxed, casual lifestyle with great
schools, churches, sports, and cultural activities. With its
friendly, close-knit community, Dillon offers a wonderful environment
for raising a family, spending time with friends, and enjoying
the outdoors. Representing most faiths and denominations, churches
in Dillon offer regular worship services, as well as youth group
activities.
Education
The Dillon District 2 School System includes six schools serving
approximately 3,900 students from pre-school through twelfth
grade. Also located in the county are two private schools, Dillon
Christian School and Avalon Academy, each serving grades K-12.
Nearby Florence is home to Francis Marion University, a four-year
institution that has the look and feel of a small, liberal arts
college with all the benefits of a state-supported comprehensive
university. Dillon is also approximately one and a half hours
from Columbia, which is home to the University of South Carolina,
and approximately four hours from Clemson University. The Medical
University of South Carolina is located in Charleston.
Recreation And Family Activities
Dillon has a first-class recreational complex, which provides
tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, jogging tracks, and
football facilities. The Dillon High School football team competed
as recently as 1999 for the state championship. Twin Lakes Country
Club offers numerous social opportunities including an 18-hole
golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a restaurant, and
a ballroom. The Little Pee Dee State Park with the Little Pee
Dee River provides opportunities for a variety of activities
including fishing, canoeing, boating, camping, hiking, swimming,
and picnicking.
Arts and Culture
Dillon offers a variety of cultural events. The renovated Dillon
County Theater is home to the MacArthur Avenue Players, the
county’s little theater group, which performs a variety of plays
annually. The theater also hosts musicals, concerts, and pageants.
The Florence Little Theatre holds similar productions including
ballets. In Charleston, the Dock Street Theatre hosts many theatrical
performances and the Gaillard Auditorium hosts ballets, operas,
and has its own symphony orchestra.
