City of Dillon Sponsors Artist In Residence
For Dillon High School Art Department

In coordination with the 2nd Annual South Plaza Exhibit, Janet Orselli, nationally known installation sculptor, spent one week with Sandra McKellar, Dillon High School Art Instructor's,  art class. Janet Orselli acting as an artist-in-residence collaborated with students and members of the community to construct a temporary installation for the “Celebrate Main St.” Festival in Dillon, SC.

An "installation" is a temporary sculpture created in a specific place to remain in place for a certain amount of time. This is a type of artwork in which objects and space are changed in order to create an entirely new experience for the viewer.

Orselli's website www.janetorselli.com has several other examples of her work.

Orselli particularly likes to work with "found objects" getting the viewer to see an object in a different way.

Individual sculptures were created by the students using objects that the city sanitation crew had collected for them.

The high school students fabricated sculptures and parts of the Main St. installation from objects that were saved from the landfill by the City of Dillon Sanitation Department crew.

For the group installation, the students used hundred of books the school was discarding to make bird houses. The project became "Books for Birds".

The installation was to have taken place during the Celebrate Main Street on North Plaza, however weather postponed the event until the next week. "Books for Birds" was installed on the grounds of the high school.
